An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safety review has concluded that Japan’s plans to release treated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station (FDNPS) into the sea are consistent with IAEA safety standards. In a report formally presented by Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his recent visit to Tokyo the IAEA also said discharges of the treated water would have a negligible radiological impact on people or the environment.

Mr Kishida, facing elections in July and rising energy prices that are squeezing voters’ budgets, said nuclear would be part of the country’s future energy policy.
He told an audience in London’s financial district that Japan would address the “vulnerability of our own energy self-sufficiency” by broadening where it buys energy from, promoting renewables and using nuclear power to diversify its sources of generation.
“We will utilise nuclear reactors with safety assurances to contribute to worldwide reduction of dependence on Russian energy,” he said.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team said on 21 January that Japan had strengthened inspections as part of extensive efforts in recent years to improve its regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety. Following an eight-day review, the experts noted that significant progress had been made since a previous IAEA mission in 2016 and also identified some areas for further improvement, recommending measures on occupational radiation protection and transport safety.
