Iran has started construction of its indigenously-designed Karoun NPP in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, according to Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI). The NPP will be built at Darkhovin about 70 kilometres from the southwestern city of Ahvaz in the provincial capital of Khuzestan, near the Karun River. Eslami told reporters after a cabinet meeting that the government has signed contracts with domestic companies to equip the plant.

Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) says it has completed the first stage of demolition of buildings at the Unit for Decommissioning of Caldas (UDC) in southern Minas Gerais, which is currently undertaking clean-up of a former uranium mine. Altogether 12 buildings were demolished at the industrial plant comprising 1,900 square metres of disused structures. The cooling tower was the last structure demolished in early September. According to INB, the area where the buildings were located will be restructured using local soil.

Almasadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy says "Rosatom has a certain advantage as supplier of the nuclear island" for a planned NPP. While the authorities continue to look for a contractor and supplier of equipment for construction of its planned NPP, they understand that Russia’s Rosatom has advantages in this area, he noted.

Kazakhstan has made progress in implementing the recommendations of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear infrastructure review mission in 2016, a team of IAEA and international experts said. The four-day Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission was conducted at the government's request.
