Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) has completed drilling ten groundwater wells, bringing the plant closer to having a longer-term solution for the provision of cooling water to the shutdown reactors after destruction of the Kakhovka dam in June, according to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

Russia’s DV Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus (NIIEFA, part of Rosatom) says a Japanese test assembly has completed testing for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), under construction in France. Eight elements of a prototype divertor, passed 6,000 test cycles at loads from 5 to 20 MW per square metre, confirming "the compliance of the Japanese element with the highest requirements" of ITER. The tests were carried out at the ITER Divertor Test Facility (IDTF) in St Petersburg, which supports tasks for the ITER project.

German Energy groups E.ON and EnBW are incurring huge costs from dismantling their NPPs. They have already shut down five plants with another five to close by 2022 and are facing combined decommissioning costs of around €17bn ($18.5bn). However, they are hoping to capitalise on their decommissioning skills in the export market and say they are attracting the interest of international customers, Reuters reported on 8 May.
