Slovak power utility Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) hosted a two-day forum, the 5th annual VVER Fuel Forum in Bratislava. The forum on nuclear fuel for VVER 440 and VVER 1000 reactors, which was sponsored by Westinghouse, was attended by representatives of utilities that are potential customers for Westinghouse VVER fuel. These included Ukraine’s Energoatom, Finland’s Fortum, the Czech Republic’s CEZ, Bulgaria’s JE Kozloduy, and Hungary’s nuclear plant operator MVM Paks. The participants exchanged experiences on the procedure for implementing fuel from Westinghouse for operating VVER-440 and VVER-1000 reactors.

Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko has revealed plans to build four new units at the Khmelnitsky NPP with construction expected to start later this year. These include two Russian designed VVER-1000 units to be built using equipment imported from the cancelled Belene project in Bulgaria. The other two will be Westinghouse-supplied AP-1000 units.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) have not yet been given access to the reactor halls of units 1, 2 & 6, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. Ukrainian nuclear utility Energoatom says it has begun transporting used nuclear fuel from its operating reactors to the newly built and commissioned Holtec-engineered Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) known as a Consolidated Interim Storage (CIS) Facility in the US. The CSFSF is expected to save approximately $200m a year compared with the previous practice of transporting used fuel to Russia for reprocessing. “Today, Ukraine is entirely self-sufficient in the strategically crucial area of storage and management of the used nuclear fuel discharged by its reactors eliminating a critical constraint in the continued generation of electricity by the nation’s nine reactors,” Energoatom noted.
