Remediation work at legacy uranium mining sites in Uzbekistan is under way, supported by a €9m ($11m) grant from the Environmental Remediation Account for Central Asia (ERA) – set up on the initiative of the European Union (EU) and managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD).

The country’s energy ministry signed a cooperation document with a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, the ministry said in a statement.
The energy ministry said the document concerns “the preparation of a feasibility study on the construction of a low-power nuclear power plant in Kyrgyzstan”.
The ministry gave no details of what type of reactor technology it is considering or what the schedule for the country’s first commercial nuclear plant might be.
In January Kyrgyzstan expressed an interest in Russia’s progress in developing SMR technology, but said it had not made a decision whether it will push ahead with a project to build one.

The country’s energy minister Alisher Sultanov also told the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 64th annual general conference that Uzbekistan is close to establishing procedures for licensing and issuing regulatory permits for nuclear energy.
This follows recent procedural progress for safety examinations of nuclear facilities by Uzbek regulatory bodies, Mr Sultanov said.
Draft decisions on Uzbekistan’s accession to four international conventions have also been prepared, for which adoption is expected by the end of 2020. These are:

Uzbekistan's preparations to build its first nuclear power plant are gathering pace with a sense of making up for lost time. The Central Asian country became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as long ago as 1994, has 50 years of experience in nuclear research and is the world's fifth biggest producer of uranium.
