UK-based Sheffield Forgemasters has been awarded a strategic nuclear qualification, which the company says positions it to support development and delivery of the next generation of civil NPPs. The nuclear qualification came after an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section III Division I NCA 3300 (NCA 3800), NCA 4000 and NQA-1 Code survey and audit, recommended it for Material Organisation (MO), and welding (NPT) accreditations.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with US-based General Atomics (GA) agreeing to work together to identify opportunities to collaborate on the use of advanced technologies and materials for nuclear energy supply. They will also cooperate on prospects to use ENEC’s experience in developing new nuclear builds as well as investments in GA’s advanced non-light water reactors, material production and 3D manufacturing capabilities.

UK-based Tokamak Energy is developing new laser measurement technology to control extreme conditions inside future fusion power. Plasma temperatures inside a tokamak reach over 100m degrees Celsius. The hydrogen fuel must be closely and accurately measured by a specialist laser system to keep the hot plasma stable, hold density and maintain fusion conditions.

Sheffield Forgemasters has completed weld-assembly of a full-size small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear vessel demonstrator using Local Electron-Beam Welding (LEBW). Sheffield Forgemasters Research, Design & Technology Director Jesus Talamantes-Silva said the company had achieved “a significant milestone in assembling a nuclear vessel demonstrator, using electron beam welding for the first time at this scale, with 100% success and no defects”.

Sheffield Forgemasters has completed weld-assembly of a full-sized small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear vessel demonstrator assembly using Local Electron-Beam Welding (LEBW). It said the technique took less than 24 hours to complete four, thick, nuclear-grade welds, typically requiring a year of work to complete.
