The Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM – which reports to the Ministry of Science and ICT,) has developed a 120kV/60kW electron-beam welding system, which can weld materials with thickness of more than 100mm. KIMM says that, together with innovative technologies for manufacturing SMRs, the new technology is expected to shorten welding time and secure economic feasibility.

After successful recommissioning in autumn 2022, the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator fusion device at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) has achieved some significant breakthroughs. In 2023, an energy turnover of 1 gigajoule was targeted, but researchers have now achieved 1.3 gigajoules. Moreover, a new record for discharge time was achieved, with the hot plasma maintained for eight minutes.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project has announced defects have been discovered in the thermal shields and vacuum vessel sectors and warned that the consequences on schedule and cost "will not be insignificant".

Canada’s General Fusion and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have initiated projects to advance the commercialisation of magnetised target fusion energy as part of an important collaborative agreement. With these unique projects, General Fusion said it will benefit from the vast experience of the UKAEA’s team. The results will hone the design of General Fusion’s demonstration machine being built at the Culham Campus in Oxford. Ultimately, the company expects the projects will support its efforts to provide low-cost and low-carbon energy to the electricity grid.

Using Electron Beam Welding (EBW), the company weld-joined two 200mm-thick, 3-metre diameter vessel sections in UK small modular reactor nuclear grade steel, describing it as a breakthrough in the industrialisation of EBW for thick-section materials.

Toshiba Corporation has been commissioned by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to manufacture four toroidal field coils for the ITER fusion reactor, under construction in Cadarache, France. In other ITER news, Europe has completed manufacture of a semi-prototype of the Blanket First Wall (left).

The European consortium of AMW (Ansaldo Nucleare S.p.A, Mangiarotti S.p.A and Walter Tosto S.p.A) has won a EUR 300 million contract for the supply of seven sectors of the ITER vacuum vessel.
