The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and Russia's TVEL have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the manufacture of nuclear fuel and its components.

South Africa's government has amended its nuclear power expansion plans, according to the draft blueprint of the government's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) a draft energy paper. The latest IRP aims to increase nuclear power output by just 1,359MWe by 2037, compared with a previous target of adding 9,600MWe of new capacity by 2030. However, nuclear power output would rise more rapidly by 20,385MWe between 2037 and 2050.

South Africa's state-owned power utility Eskom has submitted site licence applications to build and operate nuclear power facilities at two locations. The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) said on 15 March that it had received applications for "multiple nuclear installations (power reactors) and associated auxiliary nuclear installations" at Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape and Duynefontein in the Western Cape.
