Global Laser Enrichment has decided not to submit a proposal in response to a US Department of Energy request for the acquisition of high-assay low-enriched uranium enrichment, its 51%-owner Silex Systems has announced. The company has also received regulatory approval to load uranium hexafluoride for the start of testing to demonstrate the technology it plans to use in its enrichment facility at Paducah in Kentucky.

Global Laser Enrichment (GLE), jointly owned by Australia’s Silex Systems (51%) and Canada’s Cameco (49%), have approved GLE’s operating plan and budget for calendar year (CY) 2024 that enables the continuation of accelerated activities to commercialise the Silex uranium enrichment technology.

The owners of the Global Laser Enrichment (GLE) joint venture have agreed to double project expenditures in 2024 to accelerate demonstration of the SILEX laser enrichment technology at its Test Loop pilot facility in the USA this year.

US Centrus’s Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2023 Results showed an overall increase in income but a reduction in profits with mixed results for different operating sectors. While the US’s only uranium enrichment facility showed increased revenue with respect to its low-enriched uranium (LEU) operations, results for high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) were slow.

US-based Oklo has signed an Option & Right of First Refusal to Purchase Real Estate (land rights agreement) with the non-profit Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative (SODI) for land including options for the siting of two powerhouses. This is an extension of Oklo and SODI’s May 2023 agreement for land to host two more of Oklo’s Aurora design fast neutron microreactors. Oklo received a site permit in December 2019 from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to build its first Aurora facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a draft Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Portsmouth Paducah Project Office (PPPO) Technical Support Services (TSS) procurement. The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in Kentucky was constructed in 1952 to produce enriched uranium, initially for the nuclear weapons programme and later for nuclear fuel for commercial power plants. DOE now oversees environmental cleanup activities at the site, including environmental remediation, waste management, depleted uranium conversion, and decontamination and decommissioning.

France’s Orano has announced plans to extend enrichment capacity at its Georges Besse II (GB-II) uranium enrichment plant, and has begun the regulatory process to produce HALEU there. François Lurin, Senior Executive Vice President of Orano's Chemistry-Enrichment Business Unit, revealed Orano’s enrichment plans in a video interview released on social media to coincide with World Nuclear Symposium 2023. The issue had been under consideration for around a year after requests from some US and European customers seeking alternatives to Russian sources of supply.

Veolia’s U.S. nuclear clean up arm has won a contract with the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management to clean up the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Southern Ohio. The Portsmouth Decontamination and Decommissioning (contract is worth some $5.87 billion over a 10-year period. Veolia Nuclear Solutions – Federal Services (VNSFS) will act as an integrated subcontractor and the new contract replaces one currently held by Fluor–BWXT Portsmouth, LLC.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Environmental Management (EM) has awarded the Portsmouth Decontamination and Decommissioning Contract (PORTS D&D) to Southern Ohio Cleanup Company (SOCCo) of Aiken, South Carolina for work to be performed at the Portsmouth Site in southern Ohio. SOCCo is a newly formed limited liability company comprising Amentum Environment & Energy, Fluor Federal Services and Cavendish Nuclear (USA) Incorporated.
