International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) have not yet been given access to the reactor halls of units 1, 2 & 6, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. He noted that this is hindering their ability to monitor the nuclear safety and security situation at the plant.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have been informed that 21 natural gas boilers have been installed at the industrial zone nearby the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) as part of measures to provide additional heating during the winter, including for the nearby city of Energodar, according to IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

A new team of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts has crossed the frontline to replace their colleagues in monitoring nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). This is the thirteenth such mission since the IAEA established its Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ) at the site in September 2022 to help prevent a nuclear accident during the military conflict, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said. IAEA noted that, when the rotation of IAEA experts took place, there were Russian reports of drone attacks in the town of Energodar, where many plant staff live.

In his latest update, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is transitioning a second reactor to hot shutdown to provide warm water and district heating. Since April, it has kept five reactors in cold shutdown and just one, currently unit 4, in hot shutdown to generate steam to process liquid radioactive waste and to heat water for Energodar, where most plant staff live. Ahead of the upcoming winter season, it has begun transferring unit 5 to hot shutdown after carrying out safety maintenance and testing at this unit.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is once again using reactor unit 4 to generate steam for various safety functions at the facility after the repair of a water leak detected in mid-August, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. After completing the transition of unit 4 to hot from cold shutdown, ZNPP placed reactor unit 6 – which had temporarily been producing such steam during the repair work – in cold shutdown.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Gross told a press conference during the recent Board of Governors’ meeting that he was very concerned about the situation at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He noted that “artillery activity is almost constant”. IAEA experts based at the plant “have reported hearing numerous explosions over the past week, in a possible sign of increased military activity in the region that could also pose a potential threat to nuclear safety and security at the site, Grossi said in his latest update on the IAEA website.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi noted that a year has passed since he first  visited Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) and established the IAEA Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ). He said the  permanent presence of IAEA experts at ZNPP has been essential in reducing the likelihood of a nuclear accident. The IAEA has also provided ongoing assistance and monitoring in Ukraine since the start of the special military operation, including missions, experts at all Ukraine’s NPPs, facilitating international financial support, and information sharing.
