Rosatom fuel company TVEL and the Troitsk Institute of Innovative & Thermonuclear Research (TRINITI) have developed a technology to decontaminate radiation-contaminated metal equipment using ozone baths. TVEL says it is much more efficient than foreign counterparts, and makes it possible to significantly reduce time needed to treat secondary liquid radwaste.

A new Russian designed electrolysis unit has produced its first hydrogen at the Kola NPP. Hydrogen is used for cooling the turbogenerators that generate electricity at the plant. Previously this was produced by old-type alkaline electrolysers. The new ones produce hydrogen using proton-exchange membranes, which is much more environmentally friendly.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has issued a statement expressing concern about the situation at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has suffered shelling. He said it “underlines the very real risk of a nuclear disaster that could threaten public health and the environment in Ukraine and beyond”. He added: “The IAEA has received information about this serious situation – the latest in a long line of increasingly alarming reports from all sides.”

Russia and Argentina have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on uranium exploration and mining in the South American country. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is also proposing to supply Argentina with a nuclear power plant.
