US-based fission technology company Oklo has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Siemens Energy designating Siemens Energy to become Oklo’s preferred supplier for rotating equipment of the power conversion system (conventional island) for the Aurora powerhouse. Siemens Energy would also be positioned to provide consulting to support Oklo in design work of the conventional island. Oklo says that as a result of this partnership, the power generation equipment for its powerhouses is expected to be “cost-efficient, well-proven, and sourced from readily available components, enabling a key catalyst for deployment scale-up and reliability” of for its advanced fission power plants.

South Korea’s Kepco Nuclear Fuel (KNF) and GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) are to collaborate with Denmark’s Seaborg Technologies to investigate the feasibility of developing a low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel salt production facility in South Korea. The companies see fluoride fuel salt supply as important for generation 4 advanced reactors.

In a new report, “What a waste: How fast-fission power can provide clean energy from nuclear waste”, environmental group RePlanet advocates recycling used nuclear fuel as fuel for advanced fast reactors. While Europe's nuclear power reactors "have a long history of safe use, and have provided prodigious quantities of clean electricity for decades", they use less than 1% of the energy potential in the natural uranium used to make their fuel, the report notes. Moreover, irradiated fuel assemblies removed from reactors are considered “nuclear waste”.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Savannah River Site (SRS) says the H Canyon facility recently initiated actions to recycle a small amount of used highly enriched uranium (HEU) stored in the Site’s H Area in order to down-blend it into high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU). “The projected demand for HALEU far exceeds the current supply,” said HALEU Programme Manager Jeff Hasty for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the site’s managing and operating contractor.

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has said it has received Approval In Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a conceptual design of a Compact Molten Salt Reactor (CMSR) Power Barge - floating offshore NPP – using technology being developed by Denmark’s Seaborg. SHI signed a business agreement with Seaborg in January 2022 to develop a floating NPP and plans to commercialise it by 2028 after completing detailed design of all power generation facilities.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has accepted an application from X-Energy Reactor Company subsidiary, TRISO-X, for a fuel fabrication facility which will use high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Anticipating the decision, TRISO-X, in October, broke ground and began construction of the facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The TRISO-X Fuel Fabrication Facility (TF3) is expected to create more than 400 jobs and attract investment of approximately $300 million. TF3 is set to be commissioned and operational by 2025.

Talks have begun on possible location for first unit in Southeast Asian nation The ThorCon nuclear plant is encapsulated in a hull, towed to a shallow water site and ballasted to the seabed. France-based testing, inspection and certification company Bureau Veritas and US nuclear power technology developer ThorCon have signed an agreement for the development of a “mass produced” 500 MW molten salt nuclear power barge for operations in Indonesia.

ThorCon said it has already begun discussions with the Indonesian province of Bangka-Belitung, an island state to the north of the capital Jakarta, the state electricity company PLN and the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency Bapeten regarding potential sites for the demonstration and the final installation of a plant.

The companies said in a joint statement that the project would begin with technology qualification of the plant, both for the nuclear reactor itself and for its encapsulation and integration with the hull systems. This would include enclosed safe compartmentalisation allowing the replacement of depleted fuel.

The concept developed by Washington state-based ThorCon is a molten salt fission reactor. Unlike current nuclear reactors, the ThorCon reactor operates at low pressure and uses liquid fuel.
