Dr Fidele Ndahayo, CEO of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (RAEB), announced at the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference that the country plans to integrate peaceful nuclear technology solutions to trigger the socio-economic transformation leading to realisation of its long-term Vision 2050. “Rwanda’s Country Programme Framework highlights several priority areas such as Food & Agriculture, Human Health, Water Resources Management, Environment Management and Energy & Industry where the use of nuclear science solutions is going to make a significant positive impact,” he said. “Along with our efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we are committed to promoting the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for sustainable socio – economic development.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm closed the IAEA International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century which ended in Washington DC on 28 October. Grossi made a global appeal to advance the benefits nuclear energy in face of a pessimistic new report on climate change and the ongoing energy crisis.

Russia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation with the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (Afcone). The MOU was signed by Messaoud Baaliouamer, executive secretary to Afcone and Rosatom deputy director general Nikolay Spasskiy.

Iranian officials and a visiting European Union (EU) delegation headed by European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on 16 April signed various memoranda of understanding for cooperation on research. Iran's participation in the EU Horizon 2020 framework programme was also discussed, Iranian media reported. The European commission, and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) issued a joint statement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy which would include establishment of a regular high-level dialogue meeting once a year (the Framework for Partnership on Nuclear Energy) to review topics of common interest in the nuclear field.
