According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A ceremony marking the pouring of first concrete for the foundation slab of unit 2 of Egypt’s El Dabaa NPP has taken place. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Electricity & Renewable Energy of Egypt, Mohammed Shaker; the Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA), Amged El-Wakil; the General Director of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev; the Senior Vice President of JSC ASE (Rosatom Engineering Division) for NPP Construction Project Management, Alexander Korchagin; and project teams ASE and NPPA. This came after the Egyptian Nuclear & Radiological Regulatory Authority issued a permit for unit 2 construction in October.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm closed the IAEA International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century which ended in Washington DC on 28 October. Grossi made a global appeal to advance the benefits nuclear energy in face of a pessimistic new report on climate change and the ongoing energy crisis.

The US-led Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held on 22 and 23 April as a video conference, attracted 40 world leaders (presidents and prime ministers) including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also taking part were some 24 other speakers at ministerial level (environment, defence, economy) in addition to Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as almost 40 heads of environmental organisations, indigenous communities and leading businessmen, including Bill Gates. The event coincided with Earth Day, an annual event first held in 1970.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken yesterday called on heads of state to put their political differences to one side and make a collective effort to tackle global warming. Blinken moderated the first session of the Leaders Summit on Climate, which included Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The importance of Egypt's first nuclear power plant is comparable to that of the Aswan High Dam, Russia’s Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko said yesterday. Built across the Nile in Aswan, Egypt, between 1960 and 1970, the world's biggest embankment dam was designed by the Moscow-based Hydroproject Institute. Borisenko made the comparison during a visit to the El Dabaa plant's construction site, together with the chairman of Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), Amged El-Wakeel.

As policymakers grapple with the twin challenges of climate change and a post-COVID economic recovery, the benefits of nuclear power are clearer than ever, but the industry still has some way to go in addressing perceptions of its alleged drawbacks with cost, safety and radioactive waste. The nuclear industry has merely scratched the surface of the flexible benefits of nuclear power, according to panellists in a conference held this week ahead of the 11th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM11). The CEM11 side-event, Flexibility in Clean Energy Systems: The Enabling Roles of Nuclear Energy, included high-level speakers from the International Energy Agency (IEA), the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as government officials from Canada, the UK and the USA. Hosted by Saudi Arabia, CEM11 will take place on 22 September.

Exports of nuclear energy equipment and technology to meet the needs projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) could be worth USD1.3-1.9 trillion to the USA over the period to 2050, a new report by consulting firm UxC has concluded.
