Countries around the world turned to nuclear as a reliable low-carbon energy source as they looked for ways to wean themselves off Russian imports and lower carbon emissions.

New plants began operating, deals for small modular reactors were signed and countries announced ambitious plans for new-build.

On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) have agreed to work together to support new nuclear technologies in Ontario. The Canadian wing of US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has received CAD27.2m ($21.5m, €19.5m) of funding from the Canadian government to support the development of the company’s eVinci microreactor technology.

The fund has previously made grants to two SMR projects: CAD20m for Canada-based Terrestrial Energy to accelerate development of its integral molten salt reactor and CAD47.5m to Moltex Energy, another Canadian company. to help develop its 300 MW stable salt reactor-wasteburner (SSR-W) technology.

According to Westinghouse, eVinci is a next-generation, very small modular reactor for decentralised generation purposes including off-grid sites, remote communities, disaster recovery, industrial sites, defence facilities, marine propulsion, hydrogen generation, and water purification among others.

US-based Westinghouse Electric Company said on 3 May that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Laveer Engineering, a specialised nuclear engineering firm in Ontario, Canada. The acquisition will further expand Westinghouse's Candu capabilities, enabling the company to deploy its expertise to Candu reactor operators worldwide. It also brings a unique combination of tooling and nuclear plant design to Westinghouse customers.

Brookfield Business Partners is considering whether to sell Westinghouse Electric Company, the investment company's CEO, Cyrus Madon, said in a conference call with analysts on 5 February to discuss its fourth-quarter financial results.
