The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) are to establish a demonstration green hydrogen production project at the High-Temperature Test Reactor (HTTR) in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

The project means Japan has joined a number of countries in the race to generate green hydrogen from a nuclear reactor – an achievement that could produce large quantities of low-carbon energy for industry, transport and home heating.

A number of initiatives have begun in different countries to transmit electricity produced by a nuclear plant – or another low-carbon energy facility such as solar – to electrolysers, which would produce green hydrogen.

The technology is reasonably mature, but remains expensive. Proponents say it can be commercialised for large-scale consumer use – possibly within years – to help bring about the transition to a zero-carbon hydrogen-based economy without the need for fossil fuels.

The Japanese multinational Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has suggested cooperating with industries overseas to use high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) to produce hydrogen “on a massive scale” and supplying it to the steel manufacturing industry.

The engineering, electrical equipment and electronics company, which has a nuclear power generation subsidiary, said it wants to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and the first step could be to reduce CO2 emissions through the decarbonisation of thermal power and nuclear power systems.

MHI gave no details of its plans to use hydrogen in its industries, but said it was “vigorously involved” in the effort. It said HTGRs could produce hydrogen in a stable manner that Mitsubishi could use for steel manufacturing.

US-based GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Vietnam Atomic Energy Agency (VAEA) "aimed at enhancing the agency's understanding of light water reactor technology and nuclear project management". The agreement calls for GEH and VAEA to "cooperate to promote training and development of qualified human resources" associated with the development of Vietnam's civil nuclear power programme. GEH will provide practical work experience for VAEA staff in areas such as nuclear safety culture, project management and quality assurance.
