Slovak power utility Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) hosted a two-day forum, the 5th annual VVER Fuel Forum in Bratislava. The forum on nuclear fuel for VVER 440 and VVER 1000 reactors, which was sponsored by Westinghouse, was attended by representatives of utilities that are potential customers for Westinghouse VVER fuel. These included Ukraine’s Energoatom, Finland’s Fortum, the Czech Republic’s CEZ, Bulgaria’s JE Kozloduy, and Hungary’s nuclear plant operator MVM Paks. The participants exchanged experiences on the procedure for implementing fuel from Westinghouse for operating VVER-440 and VVER-1000 reactors.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) have not yet been given access to the reactor halls of units 1, 2 & 6, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. He noted that this is hindering their ability to monitor the nuclear safety and security situation at the plant.

The Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) lost the connection to its main off-site power line, forcing it to rely on back-up electricity for reactor cooling International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. IAEA experts present at the ZNPP heard several rockets that appeared to have been fired from close to the plant. The IAEA team did not see the projectiles because of clouds but the distinctive sound indicated they were fired from a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) nearby.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is transitioning its reactor unit 5 to cold from hot shutdown in order to determine the cause of boron detected in a cooling circuit. This still leaves one of the plant’s six reactors in hot shutdown to produce necessary steam and heating, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reported. Unit 4 will remain in hot shutdown. There are currently no plans to bring a second unit into hot shutdown to replace unit 5, the plant said.

Unit 6 at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) temporarily lost power recently, forcing it to rely on an emergency diesel generator for the electricity needed for cooling and other vital functions, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has reported.

Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) has agreed to a 10-year operating extension for unit 1 of the South Ukraine NPP. This followed an inspection of the plant conducted in August. The 950 MWe Soviet-built VVER unit began commercial operation in 1983 with an original design lifetime of 30 years. Ukraine has adopted a programme of 10-year extensions for its reactors. South Ukraine 1’s last 10-year extension was issued in 2013 and was due to expire in December.

A new team of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts has crossed the frontline to replace their colleagues in monitoring nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). This is the thirteenth such mission since the IAEA established its Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ) at the site in September 2022 to help prevent a nuclear accident during the military conflict, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said. IAEA noted that, when the rotation of IAEA experts took place, there were Russian reports of drone attacks in the town of Energodar, where many plant staff live.
