World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will increase collaboration in peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, particularly in agriculture and medicine. This was agreed during a two-day trip to Pakistan by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Grossi discussed a range of issues including IAEA support in agriculture and medicine as well as nuclear safety and security.

Unit 3 at Pakistan’s Karachi NPP (Kanupp) in Sindh province has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This is the second China-supplied 1,100 MWe Hualong One reactor to begin operation at Kanupp. The new unit represents an investment of $2.7bn and was built as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative.

A ceremony has been held to mark the inauguration of unit 3 of the Karachi nuclear power plant in Pakistan. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said the two Hualong One reactors at the site have now both officially been delivered to Pakistan and put into operation.
