Addressing the opening session of the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said: “We cannot build a more secure world with more nuclear weapons in existing arsenals and if more countries seek to acquire them.” His ten-minute address, covered global threats to international security, the growing role low-carbon nuclear power is expected to play in meeting the world’s energy and climate needs, the threats to nuclear safety in the war in Ukraine and the use of nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes globally.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told a press conference that Iran had informed the Agency of its intention to remove 27 cameras as well as an online monitoring system and a flowmeter from its nuclear facilities. The cameras would be removed in the coming days from various sites, including Natanz, Isfahan, Tehran and Karaj. He said this “poses a serious challenge” for inspectors working there. He estimated that some 40 cameras would remain in place.

A policy and market environment that unlocks the mitigation potential of nuclear power will enable countries to adopt more ambitious targets in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, a paper prepared by Hal Turton, an energy economist in the Department of Nuclear Energy at the International Atomic Energy Agency shows. The paper, Nuclear Power and Climate Change: Scenario Perspectives to 2050, was presented last week at the Vienna-based agency's first international conference on climate change and the role of nuclear power.

The Middle East’s first major international research centre for science application research was inaugurated on 16 May at Allan in Jordan. Scientists from across the region will use the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (Sesame) for advanced research projects. The centre is the region's first international centre of excellence and is modelled on the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). It was developed under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) with support from the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA).

The Middle East’s first major international research centre for science application research, SESAME, will be inaugurated on 16 May in Jordan. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on 11 May that it will serve scientists from across the region and beyond researching the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. IAEA has been closely associated with the project and is an observer on the SESAME council. The facility will foster innovative scientific and technological research in areas ranging from biology, archaeology and medical sciences to studying the basic properties of materials science, physics, chemistry, and life sciences.
