Following a day’s delay, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi final reached the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) on 15 June, accompanying the eighth rotation of the Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ) which has been permanently stationed at the plant since September 2022. Grossi has strengthened the mission replacing two inspectors with four – specialists from Austria, France, South Korea, and Morocco.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal have agreed that the IAEA will establish a continuous presence of nuclear safety and security experts at all of the country’s NPPs as part of stepped-up efforts to help prevent a nuclear accident during the current armed conflict.

The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) has said it remains “deeply concerned” about the situation at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), noting that plant operators were “facing unprecedented challenges in carrying out day-to-day operations and maintaining nuclear safety standards”.

On 6 September the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a lengthy report on the situation in Ukraine, and later that day IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi addressed the UN Security Council by video link on the same subject. Meanwhile, shelling of the Zaporozhzhia NPP (ZNPP) continued despite IAEA experts being stationed at the site following the IAEA's Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia (ISAMZ). ZNPP has been held by Russian forces since early March, but its Ukrainian staff continue to operate the plant.
