The defuelling of the first reactor at the UK’s Hunterston B NPP has been completed, on time and on budget, EDF Energy reported. Reactor 3 was defuelled in 16 months and work is due to start shortly on Reactor 4.

UK company Rolls-Royce SMR has visited the sites of the decommissioned Oldbury and Berkeley NPP reactors in Gloucestershire (southwest UK) for talks with stakeholders from communities around the plants. The two unit Berkeley NPP was closed in 1988-89, and the two unit Oldbury plant in 2011-12, and are now the responsibility of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

After more than 46 years of electricity generation in Somerset, the UK’s Hinkley Point B NPP closed on 1 August when the Hinkley Point B 1 reactor was permanently shut down. The Hinkley Point B 2 reactor was closed on 6 July. Hinkley Point B, which began operation in 1976, comprises two 660MWe advanced gas-cooled reactors (AGRs). During its working lifetime, the plant generated around 311TWh of electricity. In 2012, the estimated end of Hinkley Point B's generation was extended to 2023, with a +/- 2 years proviso. The closure was a few weeks behind schedule.

Workers have started removing used nuclear fuel from the reactors at the UK’s Hunterston B NPP in Scotland, EDF Energy said. The station stopped generating electricity in January. Since then the workforce has been carrying out a statutory outage to ensure the two units are ready for defuelling.
