The defuelling of the first reactor at the UK’s Hunterston B NPP has been completed, on time and on budget, EDF Energy reported. Reactor 3 was defuelled in 16 months and work is due to start shortly on Reactor 4.

Workers have started removing used nuclear fuel from the reactors at the UK’s Hunterston B NPP in Scotland, EDF Energy said. The station stopped generating electricity in January. Since then the workforce has been carrying out a statutory outage to ensure the two units are ready for defuelling.

The UK government and EDF have agreed improved arrangements to safely and efficiently decommission Britain’s seven Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) nuclear power plants that are scheduled to reach the end of their operational lives this decade.
