US company supplying three reactors for first nuclear power station

US-based X-energy Reactor Company and Canadian power company TransAlta Corporation have announced a partnership to study deployment of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Alberta. The study will be supported through funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and will assess the feasibility of repurposing a fossil fuel electricity generation site for an Xe-100 plant.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) through its Loan Programs Office (LPO) has announced the offer of a conditional commitment of up to $1.52bn as a loan guarantee to restart the 800 MWe Palisades NPP in Michigan. The project aims to bring back online the Palisades plant, which ceased operations in May 2022, and to upgrade it to produce power until at least 2051, subject to Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing approvals.

The US Department of Energy Loan Programs Office has conditionally committed up to USD1.52 billion for a loan guarantee to Holtec Palisades for its project to bring the Palisades plant, which ceased operations in May 2022, back online. If the project proceeds, it will be the first nuclear power plant in the USA to return to commercial operations after being closed down.

World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Netherlands-based nuclear energy development and consultancy company ULC-Energy has undertaken a study that investigated the potential to use civil nuclear technologies to power commercial maritime vessels. The study was commissioned by mining company and shipping charterer BHP, a major producer of commodities including iron ore, copper, nickel, and metallurgical coal. BHP has approximately 80,000 employees and contractors, primarily in Australia and the Americas.
