Opening the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 29th Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2023) in London, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi began by wishing a happy 40th anniversary to the Joint European Torus (JET) which operates at Culham near Oxford. Jet was “the first tritium experiment in Europe, breaker of scientific records, producer of generations of accomplished scientists and engineers, and a true magnet for international collaboration,” he said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency and Iter’s International Fusion Energy Organisation have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in nuclear fusion research with the long-term goal of realising fusion energy production on an industrial, power-plant scale.

The agency said it had signed the agreement, known as “practical arangements’, at its headquarters in Vienna this week. The document was conveyed to Bernard Bigot, Iter Organisation director-general, who signed it today at the Iter Council Session at Iter’s headquarters in St. Paul-lez-Durance, southern France. The arrangements “expand and deepen” a cooperation agreement from 2008, the IAEA said.

IAEA director-general Yukiya Amano noted the importance of the new arrangements. “The challenge to achieve the goal of fusion power production can only be met through concerted international efforts. Iter’s impressive work plays a central role in this field,” Mr Amano said. “We look forward to our intensified collaboration.”

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT’s) Alcator C-Mod tokamak nuclear fusion reactor on 30 September set a new world record for plasma pressure of 2.05 atmospheres. This is 16% better than the previous record of 1.77 atmospheres set at the same facility in 2005 at a temperature of 35m Celsius and lasting for two seconds. The breakthrough was presented on 17 September at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s fusion summit in Japan. Professor Robert McCrory of the University of Rochester, New York, said the result confirms that the high pressures required for burning plasma can be best achieved with high-magnetic-field tokamaks such as Alcator C-Mod.
