The agreement by Canada, France, Japan, the UK and USA to leverage their civil nuclear power sectors to ensure a stable supply of nuclear fuel for existing and future reactors came as G7 climate, energy and environment ministers concluded a two-day meeting with a promise to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels.

Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear corporation, yesterday signed a series of agreements with overseas companies during the Atomexpo conference and exhibition being held this week in Sochi, Russia. The agreements, with Chile, China, Cuba, Finland, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain and Zambia, include the engineering and medical sectors, among others.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation (Artemis) team of experts concluded a 12-day mission on 13 July to review Italy’s programme for decommissioning nuclear facilities and managing radioactive waste. It said Italy is committed to the safe and effective decommissioning of nuclear sites and management of associated radioactive waste, and also noted areas for potential improvement.

French nuclear operator Electricite de France (EDF) has agreed to buy a majority stake in nuclear group Areva's reactor business subsidiary, Areva NP. EDF said it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Areva specifying that it will take "majority control" of Areva NP of "at least 51%" with a maximum stake of 25% held by Areva and the potential participation of minority partners.

At the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, the IAEA opened the Nuclear Energy Management School. It offers specialized management training to promising young professionals from developing countries, in particular professionals from countries that are planning to develop nuclear power programmes. The school transfers the IAEA´s specific expertise and knowledge in nuclear energy, nuclear safety, and nuclear security to Member States to further enhance their national capacity.
