The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) on 18 July released a new study, “Ensuring the Adequacy of Funding Arrangements for Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management”. The 239-page document comprises a conceptual framework, 12 detailed country case studies on funding arrangements prepared in collaboration with NEA countries, and some best policy guidelines. It focuses on the interdependence of costs and funding requirements and changes in nuclear policy, such as long-term operation or premature shutdowns, as well as technological progress.

The 20th anniversary of World Nuclear Association provides us with a golden opportunity to reflect on the years that have passed, and to look ahead to the future. On 15 May 2001, the then Uranium Institute - a trade association dedicated to the nuclear fuel cycle - was transformed into World Nuclear Association.

Nuclear energy can be a critical component of a decarbonised energy system for those member states that choose to consider it as part of their sustainable development and climate change strategy, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) says in a new report. The report shows how the utilisation of local or regional uranium resources can provide a platform for sustainable development.

As policymakers grapple with the twin challenges of climate change and a post-COVID economic recovery, the benefits of nuclear power are clearer than ever, but the industry still has some way to go in addressing perceptions of its alleged drawbacks with cost, safety and radioactive waste. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe is developinga new report, The Role of Nuclear Energy in Sustainable Development: Entry Pathways. It was developed under the guidance of UNECE’s Nuclear Fuel Working Group with support from World Nuclear Association (WNA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency.
