The US Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for uranium enrichment services to help establish a reliable domestic supply of fuels using high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Such fuel is not currently commercially available from US-based suppliers.

Canada’s Cameco has announced that acquisition of?Westinghouse Electric Company in a strategic partnership with Brookfield Asset Management alongside Brookfield Renewable Partners and institutional partners has been completed. Cameco now owns a 49% interest and Brookfield a 51% in Westinghouse.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as the core company in charge of the conceptual design of a demonstration fast reactor which the government aims to put into operation in the 2040s. MHI will oversee both the conceptual design as well as research and development for a sodium-cooled fast reactor in partnership with Mitsubishi FBR Systems (MFBR), an MHI Group engineering company established in 2007 to handle the development and design of fast reactors. The design work for the new reactor is scheduled to begin in fiscal 2024.

Japan Electric Power Co. and 11 electric power companies have agreed to proceed with efforts to conduct an empirical study on reprocessing of used mixed plutonium-uranium oxide (MOX) fuel in France supported by Orano, according to the Federation of Electric Power Companies (FEPC). “As a nuclear power operator, we believe that this research will greatly contribute to the establishment of reprocessing technologies in Japan in the future,” FEPC said. “Regarding the implementation system, we are considering advancing research in collaboration with Japan Nuclear Fuel, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the Spent Fuel Reprocessing Agency, and Orano, and details will be announced as soon as decided.”

At a meeting in Paris, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade & Industry industry Nishimura Yasutoshi and France’s Minister of Energy Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher signed a joint statement to further deepen their cooperation.
