The International Atomic Energy Agenry (IAEA) has announced the release of the 2022 edition of Country Nuclear Power Profiles (CNPP), marking more than two decades since the initial launch of the Agency’s comprehensive guide on the status and development of national nuclear power programmes worldwide.

A recent report by Belgium’s the Federal Planning Bureau (FPB), entitled “Economische Vooruitzichten (Economic Outlook) 2021-2026, said Belgium’s planned nuclear phase-out would result in an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Chapter 2 of the 86-page report looks at the international context and prospects for Belgian economic growth, inflation, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The 70-year decommissioning programme of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), including long-term management of residual waste, provides a good basis for future effective implementation, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team of experts has concluded. The team made several recommendations to support JAEA in increasing the effectiveness of its decommissioning activities, including in the area of waste disposal.

Thirty-five years on from the Chernobyl accident, Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have highlighted their commitment to cooperation in nuclear power. Meanwhile Ukraine’s nuclear regulator has launched the start of operations at a new storage facility for used nuclear fuel at the Chernobyl site.

Nuclear energy must be part of the European taxonomy in order to meet the objective of the Green Deal, thirteen trade unions representing energy and nuclear workers have told Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, in a joint letter. Exclusion of nuclear power will not only have a negative impact on the European nuclear industry but also on electricity-intensive industries, they said.
