The 70-year decommissioning programme of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), including long-term management of residual waste, provides a good basis for future effective implementation, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team of experts has concluded. The team made several recommendations to support JAEA in increasing the effectiveness of its decommissioning activities, including in the area of waste disposal.

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s “historic response” to Covid-19 in 2020 saw it support 285 national laboratories in 127 countries and territories, and process 1,950 orders for RT-PCR equipment and kits, director-general Rafael Grossi said in opening remarks to the board of governors on Monday.

Member states provided extrabudgetary assistance to the value of €26.3m.

Mr Grossi said as of 2 June, 128 countries have received IAEA shipments and 274 RT-PCR units had reached the countries of their destination.

“This effort, as the pandemic itself, has not finished,” Mr Grossi said. “Countries still need help urgently. The agency continues its assistance and I invite donors to lend their generous hand to us.”

The lack of progress in clarifying the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA's) questions concerning the correctness and completeness of Iran's safeguards declarations seriously affects the ability of the IAEA to provide assurance of the peaceful nature of the country's nuclear programme, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said today in his opening statement to the quarterly session of the IAEA Board of Governors.

Country’s reactor fleet has been ‘excellent’ and shutdowns could hit security of supply The Vandellos nuclear plant in Spain is due for closure in February 2035. Courtesy Foro Nuclear. Spain should not rule out nuclear energy as an option beyond 2050 with reactor technology having “great potential” to contribute to decarbonisation through high-temperature heat supply and hydrogen production, a report by the International Energy Agency says.

The report warns that “given the great challenge” for achieving carbon neutrality in 2050, the high level of nuclear technology infrastructure and skilled professionals in Spain could be used for developing and implementing long-term energy strategies including using nuclear to contribute to the decarbonisation of the electricity system and hard-to-abate sectors such as manufacturing and transport

Spain has decided to phase out its fleet of seven commercial nuclear reactors by 2035, but the report warns this might not be straightforward.

It says the government needs to closely monitor the financial situation of its “excellent” reactor fleet to prevent any unforeseen or sudden final shutdowns that could significantly deteriorate the security of electricity supply.

The phaseout of low-carbon nuclear, along with a planned phaseout of coal plants, means natural gas combined-cycle plants will be crucial to balancing out a power system that is heavily dependent on variable renewables once coal and nuclear have left the market.

Greening our economies is not just smart for the planet; most likely it is also the surest and cheapest route back to a prosperous global economy. This is the conclusion of a working paper the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will publish tomorrow, one of its co-authors said today during World Nuclear Association's Strategic eForum on Sustainable Finance. The virtual conference examined the measures needed to ensure nuclear energy can make its fullest contribution to the twin goals of decarbonisation and economic recovery from the pandemic.
