The International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) latest country report on Turkey and energy policy review notes that Turkey has seen considerable diversification of its energy sector since the previous review in 2016. “Turkey has made significant progress on liberalising energy markets in the last decade, successfully improving predictability and transparency in pricing. However, additional reforms toward establishing more competitive gas and electricity markets will help mobilise needed investments into these sectors,” says IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol in his foreword to the 191-page report.

R&D on the design of Russia’s BN-1200 fast neutron reactor is scheduled to be complete before the end of 2021 and in 2022 state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom will decide whether or not to go ahead with construction, a conference heard.

Rosatom’s Vladimir Asmolov told Atomeco 2019 in Hungary that Russia now believed the cost of building fast reactors with a capacity of 1,200 MW will be comparable to the cost of the VVER-1200 reactors that Rosatom is already building in Russia and abroad.

“In our strategy, 2022 is defined as a fork in the road, a decision point for the construction of BN-1200,” he said.

The US Department of Energy has announced it will provide $30m to US universities, private industry and national laboratories for a range of research projects in fusion energy.

In a statement the DOE said the funding will go to 10 US multi-institutional research teams to support fusion energy research at international facilities.

The main focus of the fusion energy research is sustaining high-temperature plasmas for long durations within superconducting tokamak facilities – donut-shaped devices that confine the plasma by means of powerful magnetic fields.
