Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during a five-day visit to Russia, signed agreements with Russia for additional units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The agreement was signed following a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Industry & Trade Denis Manturov.

There have been no reports of damage to the Akkuyu nuclear power plant after two large earthquakes struck Turkey. But safety checks are continuing at the plant, which is currently under construction.

The development of a national nuclear industry facilitates a country's economic growth while at the same time keeping in harmony with low-carbon and sustainable development, Yaroslav Mozdakov, director  for communications and international affairs at Rusatom Energy International (REIN), said last week during a webinar hosted by the Expert Group on Resource Management of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. REIN is a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

Alexey Likhachov, director general of Rosatom, congratulated his staff today on the 75th anniversary of Russia's nuclear industry. To emphasise how the corporation is looking to the future, Rosatom has announced its switch to a 'united brand' by using its Mobius strip logo for all of its subsidiaries.

Russia’s Atomstroyexport, part of state nuclear corporation Rosatom, has opened a credit line RUB10.5 billion ($160m) in Roseximbank JSC for the construction of the Kudankulam nuclear plant in India, according to  Rosatom’s procurement website on 23 October.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan today attended via videolink from Ankara a ceremony to mark the pouring of first safety-related concrete for unit 1 of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Putin arrived today for a two-day working visit to the Turkish capital.

Bulgaria is seeking private investors to build the Belene NPP, which was cancelled in 2012, Prime Minister Boiko Borisov said on 11 May during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Reuters reported. Bulgaria cancelled the project after failing to find foreign investors and under pressure from Brussels and Washington to limit its energy dependence on Russia. Since then Bulgaria has opened a gas link with Romania and is working to connect its gas network with Greece, Turkey and Serbia to diversify its suppliers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expects that in the near future Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear power plant will be given the status of a strategic investment. He told a press conference on 10 March, following the meeting of the Russian-Turkish Cooperation Council, that both the Akkuyu project and the Turkish Stream pipeline project, which can be used to transit gas to Europe, aimed to ensure energy security in the region. He also said that a Russian-Turkish investment fund with a capital of up to $1bn had been created to stimulate mutual investments.

At least 1,000 litres of water is needed to grow 1kg of wheat, 5,000-10,000 litres is required for meat production, and 1kg of steel would require at least 30-35 litres. As a result, while human activities demand more and more water, the traditionally used underground water reserves extracted through wells are rapidly depleting.
