The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Organisation on 15 October signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Canadian government, which sets out terms for the transfer of Canadian-supplied nuclear material (tritium), and tritium-related equipment and technology.

After leaving the Iter project in 2003, Canada has now signed a cooperation agreement with the ITER Organisation for the transfer of Canadian-supplied tritium, and tritium-related equipment and technology. The agreement follows the signing in April 2018 of a Memorandum of Understanding to explore how Canada could participate in the project to construct the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.

The Canadian government has announced a CAD49.3 million ($37.5m) investment in General Fusion. The funding will help General Fusion create technology and support its project to develop a first-of-its-kind large-scale prototype plant that will demonstrate a practical approach to commercialising electricity from fusion energy. “General Fusion’s technology has the potential to revolutionise how sustainable energy is generated and position British Columbia—and Canada—as a global leader in fusion technology,” the announcement said.

Canada’s Minister of International Trade, François-Philippe Champagne, on 17 April signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter) on possible Canadian participation in construct the fusion reactor now being built at Cadarache in France.
