France's nuclear industry giants - EDF, Framatome and Orano - have each reported improved results for 2023, compared with 2022, and expect continued growth in 2024, partly due to France's plan to build new reactors.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity generated by the UK's newest nuclear power plants will be even lower than wind and solar power, a new analysis has confirmed. A detailed and independently verified study into lifetime emissions from Hinkley Point C (HPC) was carried out for EDF by environmental specialists Ricardo Energy & Environment and verified by engineering consultants WSP.

Country needs about 30 GW of new nuclear and a fleet of SMRs, says NIA head Tom Greatrex: ‘To get to net zero and a decarbonised power supply, in the UK we need four times the amount of clean power that we currently have.’ Courtesy NIA. The energy crisis in the UK has led to renewed calls for more reactors. NucNet asked Tom Greatrex, head of the London-based Nuclear Industry Association, about the role nuclear can play in a market hit by rising prices and facing the imminent shutdown of ageing plants.

Lower supply, higher demand, and poor wind performance led to record increases in power spot pricesThe UK nuclear reactor fleet will almost entirely shut down by 2030, curbing low-carbon generation capacityThere has been a positive shift in opinions of the role nuclear can play At at least 10 GW of new nuclear needed by mid-2030s in the UK, and possibly an additional 20 GW to meet net-zero in 2050

NucNet: The Nuclear Industry Association has been warning policymakers about the risks of energy supply based largely on renewables and natural gas. Power prices in Europe have increased to unsustainably high levels in recent months, sparking an energy crisis in many countries, especially the UK. Perhaps you can tell us why this has happened?

A new report by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), ‘Hinkley What If?’, says the UK does not need the Hinkley Point C NPP in order to meet its energy needs. ECIU director Richard Black said: "We wanted to know how essential Hinkley is for the 'energy trilemma' - keeping the lights on whilst cutting greenhouse gas emissions and keeping costs down. Our conclusion is that it's not essential; using tried and tested technologies, with nothing unproven or futuristic, Britain can meet all its targets and do so at lower cost."

A UK parliamentary committee has called EDF Energy, and other energy companies planning to build reactors in the UK, to give evidence on the future of the nuclear industry at a special inquiry in London on 23 March. Angus MacNeil, chairman of the energy and climate change committee, said the government is counting on new nuclear to supply a significant proportion of the UK's low-carbon baseload power. "The focus right now is on Hinkley Point C, but there are other important projects in the pipeline. Serious questions are being raised about the cost and viability of the Hinkley project and the value for money for taxpayers," he said. The committee said it will hear from commentators who have raised concerns about financing nuclear projects.

EDF is to extend the life of half of its UK NPPs, safeguarding 2,000 jobs and shoring up national power supplies, but failed to make a final decision about the new Hinkley Point C NPP. EDF announced the planned life extensions on 16 February but the statement did not include an investment decision on Hinkley Point C in Somerset. The GBP18bn project was first approved in 2013 and a final investment decision was expected last October following EDF's partnership with Chinese utility CGN. However, the decision has been repeatedly postponed in face of EDF's financial problems and opposition from trade union members on its board.

Hiroaki Nakanishi, chairman and CEO of Hitachi, said on 30 January that the setbacks experienced by EDF in developing the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in the UK raised questions about how future NPPs, including its GBP14bn ($19.9bn) Wylfa Newydd project on Anglesey are to be funded.

Rolls-Royce has announced plans to collaborate with EDF Energy, the UK business of the French utility group, on programmes that will initially support the construction of four new nuclear power plants in the UK. The agreement covers engineering and technical support during both the pre and post construction phases. In addition, joint development, validation and supervision of the supply chain, together with the potential for the provision of nuclear related systems, will be explored.
