Holtec International has announced that the second double-walled canister (DWC) had been loaded with RBMK reactor used nuclear fuel into the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP) site’s Interim Storage Facility (ISF-2) in Ukraine yesterday.

The first canister of used nuclear fuel was yesterday loaded into the Interim Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-2) at the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine. ISF-2 is the largest dry-type used fuel storage facility in the world and has an operating life of at least 100 years.

Chernobyl nuclear power plant is to become a testing ground for South Korean experimental technologies after the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone (GAZO) Serhiy Kalashnik and the President of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) signed a memorandum of technical cooperation in the field of scientific research.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has provided Belarus with a mobile laboratory for assessing radiological threats associated with forest fires in the Polessie State Radio-Ecological Reserve, adjacent to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Recent fires in the exclusion zone did not lead to a hazardous increase in air-borne radioactive particles.

All construction and installation works at the construction site of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) at the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine is expected to be completed by the end of September. The country’s nuclear power plant operator, Energoatom, announced the new target date following a meeting at the site by its acting president, Petr Kotin, on 15 May in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
