The Ontario government has announced the first six projects that will receive funding from the Hydrogen Innovation Fund which was set up in February. This will kickstart and develop opportunities for low-carbon hydrogen to serve as a clean fuel. The Fund plans to invest CAD15m ($11m) over the next three years to kickstart and develop opportunities for hydrogen to be integrated into Ontario’s electricity system, including hydrogen electricity storage.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced two Requests for Information (RFI) to collect feedback from stakeholders to inform the implementation and design of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Regional Hydrogen Hub and the Electrolysis and Clean Hydrogen Manufacturing and Recycling Programmes. This request will help accelerate progress, reduce technology cost, and ramp up the use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest World Energy Outlook (WEO), published on 13 October, says transition to a clean energy system is progressing too slowly for the world to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. However, the report provides analysis of how the world can still move towards a pathway that would have a good chance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C but sees no key role for nuclear power.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) said on 5 October that it had achieved a breakthrough in hydrogen storage technology using a new magnesium alloy. Storage of hydrogen as a gas typically requires high-pressure tanks (35-70 MPa tank pressure). Storage of hydrogen as a liquid requires cryogenic temperatures because the boiling point of hydrogen at one atmosphere pressure is −252.8°C. Neither of these options are ideal for widespread use, CNL noted.

Mikhail Chudakov, IAEA deputy director-general and head of the department of nuclear energy, said in his opening remarks at the event – held to discuss innovations in the production and use of nuclear hydrogen – that a single 1,000 MW nuclear power reactor could produce more than 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year to fuel more than 400,000 fuel cell vehicles or more than 16,000 long haul fuel cell trucks.
Delegates explored developments in the coupling of nuclear power reactors with hydrogen production plants to efficiently produce both electricity and hydrogen as a cogeneration system, as well as how energy sector cooperation, supply chain and policy support are facilitating the progress of these projects.
