US-based Oklo has completed the second phase of the Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article (THETA) testing campaign in collaboration with the US Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). THETA is a sodium fixture with instrumentation installed at ANL’s Mechanisms Engineer Test Loop (METL) facility.

Argentina’s RA-10 multi-purpose research reactor at Ezeiza Atomic Centre (CAE - El Centro Atómico Ezeiza) in Buenos Aires province, is now about 80% completed, according to project manager Herman Blaumann. "The civil work is already finished and in terms of supplies and installations the progress is 75%. This week the reactor's reflector tank will arrive ... the installation of which is another key step in the work,” he told Argentina's Foreign Minister Diana Mondino during a tour of the facility.

The US Department of Energy (DOE), through the National Reactor Innovation Centre (NRIC), has awarded $3.9m to Radiant, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (UNSC) and Westinghouse to design experiments to test microreactor designs in the planned Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) test bed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

ARC Clean Technology Supply Chain Manager, Anthony Jackman says the procurement process for long-lead items for the ARC-100 commercial demonstration unit at Canada’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, such as the reactor vessel and intermediate heat exchangers, will begin in 2024. Contract awards are expected in the latter part of 2025 and the procurement schedule for other items will follow, he told “New Brunswick SMRs: A Collaborative Journey Towards Net Zero”. The meeting was a supply chain event for New Brunswick small modular reactor (SMR) industry leaders, government officials and experts hosted by Opportunities New Brunswick.

Framatome has been awarded a $1m contract award for phase two of the Digital Twin-based Diagnostics for Nuclear Auxiliary Systems project in North America. Funding is sponsored by the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) office under the GEMINA (Generating Electricity Managed by Intelligent Nuclear Assets) programme. GEMINA aims to develop digital twin technology for advanced nuclear reactors and transform operations and maintenance systems in the next generation of NPPs.

Canada’s North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council (NSMTC) and its seven First Nation member communities have signed equity agreements with Moltex Energy Canada and ARC Clean Technology Canada related to small modular reactor (SMR) technology. These will enable NSMTC and its member communities (Oinpegitjoig, Ugpi’Ganjig, Natoaganeg, L’nui Menikuk, Tjipogtotjg, Metepenagiag, Amlamgog) to share in Moltex and ARC’s planned development and deployment of advanced nuclear technology in New Brunswick and globally.

Testing is underway at an electric-powered microreactor prototype developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The 12-foot-tall machine is a full-scale replica of the Department’s Marvel microreactor, which is being built to advance new reactor technologies. Marvel will be the first new reactor at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in more than four decades and is aiming to be operational in 2025.

A US Department of Energy (DOE) report has suggested pairing advanced reactors with carbon dioxide removal technologies, including direct air capture. DOE says advanced reactors could lower the levelised cost of certain direct air capture technologies by up to 13% compared with non-nuclear-powered systems. This could also boost reactor performance and market feasibility.
