US-based Oklo has completed the second phase of the Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article (THETA) testing campaign in collaboration with the US Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). THETA is a sodium fixture with instrumentation installed at ANL’s Mechanisms Engineer Test Loop (METL) facility.

Testing is underway at an electric-powered microreactor prototype developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The 12-foot-tall machine is a full-scale replica of the Department’s Marvel microreactor, which is being built to advance new reactor technologies. Marvel will be the first new reactor at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in more than four decades and is aiming to be operational in 2025.

A US Department of Energy (DOE) report has suggested pairing advanced reactors with carbon dioxide removal technologies, including direct air capture. DOE says advanced reactors could lower the levelised cost of certain direct air capture technologies by up to 13% compared with non-nuclear-powered systems. This could also boost reactor performance and market feasibility.

An electric-powered prototype of one of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Marvel microreactors has been installed at a manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania and is gearing up for testing. The non-nuclear prototype, which is a full-scale replica of microreactor, stands 12 feet tall and weighs 2,000 pounds. The installation was completed by Creative Engineers Inc (CEI).

US-based Oklo has submitted a Licensing Project Plan (LPP) to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), outlining its plans for the future licensing of a first-of-a-kind fuel recycling facility. In early 2022, Oklo and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) signed an agreement to formalise their commitment to commercialising advanced fuel recycling technology.
