The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) fusion project has given a progress update on tackling the defects discovered last year in the thermal shields and vacuum vessel sector. It hopes to tender for the thermal shield work, and have a contractor in place, by the end of March.

Defects have been identified in two key First-of-a-kind tokamak components for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter) nuclear fusion plant under construction at Cadarache in southern France, with the €20bn project facing potential delays while repairs are carried out.

Iter said in a project update that the two components are the vacuum vessel thermal shields and the vacuum vessel sectors.

The issues “demand in-depth examination, creativity in devising corrective actions, and time and budget to repair”, Iter said.

The vacuum vessel thermal shields are actively cooled silver-plated elements, 20 mm thick that contribute to thermally insulating the plant’s superconducting magnet system operating at 4K, or minus 269C.

The revenue of Russia’s Siberian Chemical Company (SCC) in 2016 amounted to RUB14.9n (253m) up from RUB14.2bn in 2015. Net profit was more than RUB1.8bn, RUB1.1bn more than in 2015. SCC, part of Rosatom’s fuel company Tvel,  is Russia’s only producer of uranium hexafluoride (conversion), and also specialises in the enrichment of natural and regenerated uranium for NPP fuel. It produces stable isotopes and has facilities for refining natural and recovered uranium from chemical and radioactive impurities. SCC also produces high purity fluorides of various metals.

Russia's Mashinostroitelny Zavod, a subsidiary of nuclear fuel company Tvel, has completed testing of fuel pellets produced using "dry" technology for the ageing Bilibino EGP-6 graphite-moderated boiling water reactors. Tvel said on 17 March that it had "begun to master" the technology in 2008 and had been using it to manufacture fuel for VVER reactors since 2010. "Dry" technology has several advantages over the "wet" variant, Tvel said. In addition to increasing productivity, the technology "eliminates the properties of powders produced in various configurations, lowers operating costs for equipment maintenance as well as processing costs", it said. The four EGP-6 reactors in eastern Siberia were constructed in the 1970s for cogeneration and are due to be decommissioned by 2022.
