A joint development agreement (JDA) has been signed between US utility Energy Northwest and X-Energy Reactor Company for the deployment of up to 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in central Washington State. Energy Northwest expects to bring the first Xe-100 module online by 2030.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) has awarded vouchers to four companies under its Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative to help support the development of several US advanced reactor designs. The companies will be provided access to the research capabilities and expertise at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to help advance their projects.

Holtec International and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co Ltd (Hyundai E&C) have signed an agreement to launch an accelerated programme to complete the balance of plant design of the remaining systems and structures for the SMR-160 advanced small modular reactor (SMR). The SMR-160 is a pressurised light-water reactor, generating 160MWe (525MWt) using low-enriched uranium fuel, with flexibility to produce process heat for industrial applications and hydrogen production.
