US-based X-energy Reactor Company and Canadian power company TransAlta Corporation have announced a partnership to study deployment of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Alberta. The study will be supported through funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and will assess the feasibility of repurposing a fossil fuel electricity generation site for an Xe-100 plant.

US-based X-energy Reactor Company has opened the first training centre for future operators of its Xe-100 advanced small modular reactor (SMR). The Plant Support Center (PSC) is a 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility, which includes a full-scale plant control room simulator, reactor protection system prototype, and virtual reality experience, as well as offices and classrooms.

UK-based Sheffield Forgemasters has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with US X-energy and Cavendish Nuclear (a UK subsidiary of Babcock International) to explore opportunities around the deployment of a fleet of Xe-100 high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) in the UK.

Country becomes latest to turn to reactors for low-carbon energy security Vattenfall is majority owner of three operational reactors at Forsmark (pictured) and two at Ringhals. Sweden’s incoming government will ask state-run utility Vattenfall to plan and procure new nuclear power stations – potentially making the country one of an increasing number turning to commercial reactors as a source of low-carbon, baseload energy supply.

“New reactors will be built in Sweden,” said Ebba Busch, whose Christian Democrat party belongs to an alliance that won the most seats in last month’s general election. The right-wing bloc is scheduled to become the Nordic nation’s next government in a parliamentary vote next week.

Sweden now joins other countries in Europe that are turning to nuclear power in response to record high energy prices and fears over the security of key infrastructure.

Swedes have debated nuclear power for decades, but the energy source has garnered popular support recently amid the ongoing power crunch.

Seoul to resume construction of two units as president says building reactors is ‘global trend’ Work on Shin-Hanul-3 and Shin-Hanul-4 was halted in 2017 under the nuclear phaseout policy of the previous administration. South Korea has announced a new energy policy that calls for a “feasible and reasonable energy mix” with construction of the Shin-Hanul-3 and - 4 nuclear powers to resume and the aim of increasing the share of nuclear power to a minimum of 30% by 2030.

The policy effectively reverses the previous administration’s plans to phase out commercial nuclear energy.

Former president Moon Jae-in’s policy had been to retire the country’s 24 commercial reactors, which supply about 30% of its electricity generation, and refrain from building new ones.

By contrast, new president Yoon Suk-yeol, who took office earlier this year, is bullish on the need for South Korea to embrace nuclear energy. He has said building nuclear power plants is a global trend and essential to the reduction of carbon and energy security, noting that the EU had recently classified nuclear power as green energy in its sustainable finance taxonomy.

Japanese engineering, procurement, and construction firm JGC Holdings Corporation (JGC HD) has agreed to invest USD40 million in small modular reactor developer NuScale Power. It will also partner with Fluor Corporation - NuScale's majority investor - on the deployment of NuScale power plants.
