Japanese engineering, procurement, and construction firm JGC Holdings Corporation (JGC HD) has agreed to invest USD40 million in small modular reactor developer NuScale Power. It will also partner with Fluor Corporation - NuScale's majority investor - on the deployment of NuScale power plants.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a final safety evaluation report (FSER) for NuScale's small modular reactor. This is the first-ever FSER to be issued by the NRC for an SMR, and represents the completion of the technical review and approval of the design.

US-based NuScale Power announced on 28 August that the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) had completed Phase 6 review—the last and final phase—of the Design Certification Application (DCA) for its small modular reactor (SMR) with the issuance of the Final Safety Evaluation Report (FSER).

New York-based Terrestrial Energy USA announced on 24 January that it had informed the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of plans to license a small modular reactor (SMR). Terrestrial said it intends to start "pre-application interactions" with NRC this year and to make its licensing application in late 2019.
