Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has announced a target of achieving carbon-neutral operations at the Chalk River Laboratories site in Ontario by 2040. It said connecting to the small modular reactor proposed for the site could contribute to meeting this target.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (AOPFN) have signed a long-term relationship agreement to formalise relations between two of Canada’s leading nuclear organizations and the Renfrew County-based First Nation. The agreement will establish a working group to pursue ongoing collaboration, and create a Neya Wabun (Guardian) program to establish a regular AOPFN monitoring presence at designated AECL sites, among other environmental, cultural and economic protection and promotion activities and programs.

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB) have launched a NuScale Power Energy Exploration Centre (E2 Centre) at the University’s Faculty of Energy Engineering. It includes a control room simulator for NuScale’s VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) power plant. It is the first E2 Centre to be established outside the USA. The first E2 Centre was opened at Oregon State University in 2020.

US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and SK Ecoplant to conduct R&D on clean hydrogen production. The three companies intend to construct a Hydrogen Micro Hub at the SK Ecoplant’s headquarters in Seoul's Jongno-gu.

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) has selected Candu Energy (part of Canada’s SNC-Lavalin Group) to carry out additional pre-project work for the Candu reactor at unit 1 of the Cernavoda NPP. This is in preparation for extending its operating life. As part of a $65m two-year agreement, SNC-Lavalin will perform long-term engineering and front-end engineering services to prepare the future refurbishment project at Cernavoda 1, which will extend its service life by another 30 years to 2060.
