An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) team has completed a 11-day mission to the USA hosted by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The nine-person team reviewed the nuclear security regime for nuclear material and nuclear facilities. This included an assessment of the governmental organisations and legislation relevant to physical protection, the regulatory role and processes, procedures and practices for inspection and enforcement and the sustainability of the regime.

Hyundai Engineering CEO Hong Hyun-seong and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) President Joo Han-gyu have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly promote the commercialisation and export of KAERI’s SMART small modular reactor (SMR). Hyundai Engineering will be responsible for business development, financing and EPC (engineering, procurement & construction) for verification and commercialisation of SMART and KAERI will continue to support reactor design and licensing.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste & Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning & Remediation (ARTEMIS) mission has concluded the ten-day mission to Italy. The review was carried out at the request of Italy and hosted by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (‘MASE’).

Canada and Romania have signed a CAD3bn ($2.2bn) export development deal to support construction of two new units at the Cernavoda NPP. Canadian Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said the financing offer for Romania’s national nuclear operator, Nuclearelectrica, to buy supplies or services from Canadian companies.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (AOPFN) have signed a long-term relationship agreement to formalise relations between two of Canada’s leading nuclear organizations and the Renfrew County-based First Nation. The agreement will establish a working group to pursue ongoing collaboration, and create a Neya Wabun (Guardian) program to establish a regular AOPFN monitoring presence at designated AECL sites, among other environmental, cultural and economic protection and promotion activities and programs.

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB) have launched a NuScale Power Energy Exploration Centre (E2 Centre) at the University’s Faculty of Energy Engineering. It includes a control room simulator for NuScale’s VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) power plant. It is the first E2 Centre to be established outside the USA. The first E2 Centre was opened at Oregon State University in 2020.

The director of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khaled Touqan, said, looking forward to the next 10 years, JAEC is considering small reactors. It is looking at various possibilities including designs from Russia, Korea, France, and the UK, trying to determine the optimal technical specifications and how to adapt such reactors to the Jordanian environment, Touqan explained. He noted the potential use of small nuclear reactors for water desalination as well as power production.
