Boris Johnson expressed his "passionate" support for nuclear power when he addressed the House of Commons for the first time as UK prime minister yesterday. Westinghouse plans to build three AP1000s (3.4 GWe) at Moorside, the nuclear new-build site next to Sellafield in the UK, with the first coming online in 2024, it said, in an announcement that its corporate parent Toshiba has decided in principle to buy a controlling stake in NuGen for £102 million (EUR 122).

The Joint Venture to develop new nuclear build at Sellafield, NW England, “NuGen,” has finally been established. Three companies - GDF Suez , Iberdrola and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) – teamed together to buy 190 ha (470 acres) land at Sellafield from the NDA in 2009. The consortium paid an upfront payment of GBP19.5 million, with a further payment of at least GBP50.5 million to follow in the next six years.

As Nuclear Engineering International magazine revealed, the UK government has dismissed three proposed sites for new nuclear power by 2025: Dungeness, Braystones and Kirksanton, according to energy national policy statements released for a second round of public comment. The deadline for comment is 24 January 2011.

Westinghouse has appointed Dr. Rita Bowser as vice president, UK AP1000 Projects. Responsible for directing the AP1000 programme in the United Kingdom, Bowser's responsibilities will expand to include leadership of other AP1000 projects throughout the European Union as opportunities there continue to develop.
