World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Russia’s State Duma recently held a "government hour" with the participation of Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, during which he discussed conditions at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He emphasised that physical protection of the station has been restored. “It was destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian forces,” he said. “A special protective canopy has been created over the used nuclear fuel storage facility, which caused great concern as there were attacks on this site.”

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Pre-SALTO (Safety Aspects of Long Term Operation) review mission has completed a review of long term operational safety at unit 1 of the Cernavoda Nuclear NPP at the request of plant’s operator, SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN). Cernavoda 1 went into commercial operation in 1996. It is one of two 700 MWe Candu-6 pressurised heavy water reactors at the NPP. SNN is planning to refurbish the reactor and extend the total operating lifetime to approximately 60 years.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Task Force, which is conducting a safety review of Japan’s discharge of treated water to the sea from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP (FDNPP), has issued its first full report since the discharge began in 2023. The Task Force found the discharge to be consistent with international safety standards and reaffirmed the conclusions from the Agency’s comprehensive safety report issued in July last year.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has recalled that in his opening statement to the IAEA Board in November, he reported that IAEA had observed increased levels of activity at, and near, the Light Water Reactor (LWR) at Yongbyon in North Korea. Also – since mid-October – a strong water outflow from its cooling system was noted. These observations were consistent with the commissioning of the LWR, he said.

The 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) ended in Dubai with a lengthy agreement unanimously adopted by all parties calling for a transitioning away from fossil fuels and an acceleration of zero- and low-emission technologies. Although nuclear was included, it was mentioned just once in paragraph 28, sub-section (e) of the 197-paragraph text.
