The signature of two key arrangements facilitated by the US Foundational Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) Program to advance deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) in Ghana and establish the country as a regional SMR hub were announced at the Africa Nuclear Business Platform meeting in Accra on May 28.

South Korea could construct up to three large new nuclear power reactors as well as a small modular reactor by 2038, according to a draft long-term energy plan released by the country's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

A Statement of Intent has been signed between the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (MEXT). Under the agreement, NNSA and MEXT will collaborate to increase the proliferation resistance of research reactors in emerging nuclear power countries including the Asian region. They will also proceed with efforts to incorporate proliferation resistance concepts in the design stage of the new research reactor at the Monju Site, which will be used for education, training and research.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA Safety Aspects of Long Term Operation (SALTO) team has completed a review of long term operational safety of unit 3 at the Mihama NPP in Japan. The review mission was requested by the plant’s operator, Kansai Electric Power Company.

The US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has signed bilateral agreements with Japan and South Korea to cooperate in optimising the nuclear non-proliferation features of their respective research reactor models aimed at export markets.

Japanese utility Kansai Electric Power Company is implementing timely measures for the safe long-term operation of unit 3 at its Mihama nuclear power plant, a team of International Atomic Energy Agency experts has concluded. The team also provided recommendations and suggestions to further improve the safe operation of the unit beyond 40 years.

South Korea is to co-operate with the US in optimising nuclear proliferation resistance in its research reactors for export. A joint statement issued by the Korean Ministry of Science & ICT and the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said the two countries plan to collaborate on designing research reactors and associated facilities developed by Korea under NNSA's Proliferation Resistance Optimization-X (PRO-X) programme.

Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) says it is developing digital twin technology to monitor and control South Korea’s 26 nuclear power units more effectively. A digital model of a physical system will allow its central R&D centre in Daejeon to remotely check the units at all five NPPs – Kori, Wolsong, Hanbit, Hanul and Saeul – and react immediately to unexpected situations.

World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.
