Bangladesh Railway on 10 July signed a contract with a joint venture of Bangladesh companies Standard Engineers Ltd and Castle Construction Ltd and Indian company GPT Infrastructure to build a new 26.5km railway link from Bangladesh’s Rooppur nuclear plant to Ishwardi. Kolkata-based GPT Infrastructure said its share of the joint venture is 34%.

A Bangladesh-Indian joint venture is to build a new 26.5 kilometre railway link from the Rooppur nuclear power plant to Ishwardi under a contract signed in Dhaka on 10 July. The contract is to be completed within 18 months.

First concrete was poured on 30 November for the basemat of unit 1 at Bangladesh’s first nuclear plant,  marking the formal start of construction of the Russian-supplied VVER-1200 reactor. Two 1200MWe units are to be built at Rooppur, on the eastern bank of the river Ganges, with the first unit scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2023 followed by the second in 2024.
