Kazakhstan’s national atomic company Kazatomprom has reported a slight year-on-year increase in its first quarter uranium production. Production for the quarter was 5077 tU (100% basis), up from 4744 tU for the same period in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 7%. However, Kazatomprom emphasised that its production guidance for 2024 of 21,000-22,500 tU (100% basis) remains unchanged while noting that "sanctions pressure due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and limited access to some key materials are not known". As a result, “annual production volumes may differ from internal expectations".

The US Senate has unanimously voted to approve legislation banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia. The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act must be signed by President Biden before becoming law. It would bar US imports 90 days after enactment while permitting temporary waivers until January 2028. The House of Representatives adopted a similar bill by voice vote in December 2023. However, the legislation was stalled for some time in the Senate due to unrelated political differences.

A set of steam generators for unit 3 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Türkiye has been shipped from Atommash plant in Volgodonsk (part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division). The steam generators will now begin a 3,000 km journey by waterways and sea to the NPP construction site. In May, the reactor intracranial devices and the upper unit for Akkuyu 3 will be shipped from Atommash. Currently, the plant is also producing key equipment for Akkuyu 4.

The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) has been installed at unit 4 of the Kudankulam NPP under construction in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India with the assistance of Rosatom. The RPV installation was carried out using open top technology, which had already been used at Kudankulam 3. This involves installing reactor components through the open dome, which significantly reduces the time required for the operation. Preparation was carried out in record time, according to Rosatom. In the morning the equipment was transferred to a vertical position, then the crane lifted it to a height of 50 metres and lowered it into the reactor building. Installation of key equipment such as steam generators, the main circulation pumping units and the pressure compensator will now begin.
