The Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade on 8 July published a resolution giving preliminary approval for Elektrárna Dukovany II, a subsidiary of power utility CEZ, which is 70% state-owned, to build at least one new reactor, with up to three more at the Dukovany and Temelín nuclear plants.

New NP - the Areva NP subsidiary holding the Areva Group's nuclear reactor operations - has been renamed Framatome following its sale to EDF, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Assystem. Framatome is the name of a former French reactor vendor from which Areva was originally created.

The restructuring of France's Areva group has taken a step forward with the implementation of a €2.0 billion ($2.3 billion) capital injection from the French state. NewCo - Areva's separated nuclear fuel cycle activities - is also to receive a €2.5 billion capital increase from the state by the end of this month.

The European Commission has approved the proposed takeover of New NP, the Areva Group’s nuclear reactor business, by French state-controlled utility Electricite de France (EDF). The Commission had already concluded in January that France’s proposal to grant aid to Areva in the form of a capital injection of €4.5bn ($5bn) was in line with EU state aid rules. It ruled that payment of the aid was subject to certain conditions, including authorisation of the sale of Areva's reactor business to EDF under EU merger rules. Approval of the takeover means that this condition has now been met.

The European Commission yesterday approved EDF's takeover of Areva's nuclear reactor business under EU merger regulations. The transaction, expected to be completed by the end of this year, is "unlikely to raise competition concerns", it said.

The EDF Board of Directors on 17 May approved the establishment of Edvance, which brings together EDF and Areva NP engineers. as part of the reconstruction of the French nuclear industry. Edvance will be in charge of the basic design and implementation (studies, procurement support, assembly and commissioning) for projects involving nuclear islands and control systems for new reactors being built, both in France and worldwide.

The board of directors of French utility EDF today approved the formation of Edvance, a new company focused on the supply of nuclear islands. Edvance, of which EDF will hold 80% and Areva NP 20%, will be responsible for the design and implementation of nuclear islands and control systems for new reactors constructed in France and worldwide.
