Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) has completed manufacture of the final toroidal field (TF) coil ordered by Japan's National Institutes for Quantum & Radiological Science & Technology (QST) for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) under construction at Cadarache in France. Japan is responsible for the manufacture of nine of 19 TF coils for ITER, with MHI producing five coils.

Japan's Agency for Natural Resources & Energy (ANRE - part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry) has selected Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) as the core company to lead development of a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) programme. MHI will coordinate R&D, design, and construction of the HTGR demonstration reactor that ANRE plans to put into operation in the 2030s.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as the core company in charge of the conceptual design of a demonstration fast reactor which the government aims to put into operation in the 2040s. MHI will oversee both the conceptual design as well as research and development for a sodium-cooled fast reactor in partnership with Mitsubishi FBR Systems (MFBR), an MHI Group engineering company established in 2007 to handle the development and design of fast reactors. The design work for the new reactor is scheduled to begin in fiscal 2024.

Orano NPS, the Orano Group's nuclear logistics subsidiary, has signed a contract with Japan’s Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel (MNF) to join a package share group dedicated to DN30 casks. MNF is part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) group .This is new service for the nuclear industry comprises the formation of a package-share group for the transportation of enriched uranium (uranium hexafluoride - UF6), modelled on car-sharing and based on use rather than individual ownership. MHI will have access to a common fleet according to its own specific needs.
